Job Purpose |
Performs skilled journeyman duties in general building lock and door hardware systems. Maintains security and Key System for all facilities of the College of Charleston. Maintains lock and key security, including implementation of system
changes, making, controlling and issuing keys and repairing &/or replacing locks and door hardware as required. Evaluates and recommends improvements on the College locking system. |
Minimum Requirements |
A high school diploma and four (4) years of experience in the locksmith trade is required. ALOA (Assoc. Locksmiths of America) trade certification is preferred. A valid SC driver’s license, or the ability to obtain
one within 30 days of employment, as the employee will be required to drive state vehicles to transport equipment and/or personnel. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply. |
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities |
Must have skill to anticipate, locate and correct general and emergency problems as related to building lock and door hardware systems. A working knowledge of high security keying systems such as Medeco Biaxial and Schlage Everest Primus
is preferred. Must have basic computer skills with ability to learn e-mail and maintenance work order systems. Must have the ability to comprehend blueprints and door hardware specifications. Must have knowledge of and ability to use key cutting equipment
and other tools, equipment, materials and supplies related to the locksmith trade. |
Additional Comments Regarding Position |
Must be able to perform duties as described and work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Must be able to work in close quarters, climb ladders/stairs, enter/exit hatches, & work on rooftops. Must be able to work in areas
of excessive heat/cold and lift or move furniture, objects, heavy components, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Overtime & call back work is required after normal working hours & on weekends as needed. May be required to be on campus prior to & immediately
following all emergencies such as hurricanes, floods, snow/ice storms, etc. |

1. Responsible for the repair and replacement of locks, door closers and various hardware for locking systems. Troubleshoots, repairs, replaces, and installs locks/locking systems as appropriate. Performs tasks required from work orders,

2. Establishes and maintains uniformity in locking systems to ensure accessibility by appropriate personnel to all buildings on campus, while simultaneously ensuring the security of the buildings. Maintains an accurate database of key codes,
key distribution and key policies/procedures, as well as, an accurate inventory of trade related tools and other equipment. Responsible for implementing and maintaining electronic and hardcopy records and procedures associated with the distribution and return
of all keys. Issues keys to authorized recipients, including staff, faculty, and students. |
