Job Purpose

The Application Program Analyst serves as the lead programmer and data process developer within the College of Charleston’s Division of Enrollment Planning. This role leads and supports projects related to developing standardized and automated data processes that enable accurate and efficient sharing of data and information. Primary job duties include custom programming in multiple languages, ETL process and data pipeline development, business intelligence development support, and process documentation. This position is collaborative with multiple offices within the Division of Enrollment Planning and the Division of Information Technology.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, computer information systems, or similar field. Work experience in computer programming, software application development, workflow development, project management, and/or systems analysis. Experience in a higher education setting preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Required

  • Demonstrated understanding of relational database and data warehousing concepts and architectures, ETL architectures, API management, system integrations, and web/cloud applications
  • Understanding of project management concepts and agile methodology
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages; emphasis on Java and SQL but also Python and/or R
  • Experience developing ETL processes within Informatica or similar middleware application(s)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications, namely Excel, Teams, SharePoint, and PowerPoint
  • Superior skill and passion for technical problem solving and logic development
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and security
  • Talent for conceiving of ways to enhance data and business process efficiencies
  • Eagerness to research, learn, and teach how to utilize new software applications
  • Ability to be proactive in a fast-paced environment and effectively prioritize competing requests and tasks
  • Professional, clear, effective communication style when collaborating with team members and end users
  • Self-motivated to work toward continuous improvement in all aspects of the job

Preferred

  • Experience with any of the following applications: Salesforce, TargetX, Tableau, Apex, Visualforce, Informatica, Axiom Elite, Git
  • Experience working and/or developing within relational databases such as Salesforce or other CRM systems
  • An understanding of business processes and best practices in admissions and higher education
  • Relevant software or technology certifications or badges

Custom programming

Develops custom programming to enhance data transfer and ETL processes, CRM functionality, and statistical modeling routines. Writes custom code in one or more C-family programming languages including but not limited to Java, Python, and R. Constructs SQL-based queries and logic in Informatica, Cognos, Argos, and other applications. Contributes to the development of objects, custom coded features, and user interfaces in Salesforce (SOQL, Apex, Visualforce, etc.) and other platforms. Organizes scripts using version control systems (e.g., Git). Serves as subject matter expert and teacher for team members developing their own programming skills.

Data pipeline development

Leads and supports data pipeline development projects for transferring data and information efficiently and accurately between systems and databases. Designs, determines functional requirements for, develops and implements ETL processes utilizing a variety of applications including but not limited to Informatica, Axiom Elite, Tableau Prep, Cognos, Argos, and custom programming. Effectively captures and communicates data pipeline details and mappings using tables and diagrams. Schedules and monitors automated data transfer jobs. Enhances scheduled job efficiencies to optimize traffic and performance given database capacity and API limits. Contributes to SFTP setup and maintenance.

Collaborates with team members for report development in Salesforce, Cognos Analytics, Argos, and other BI tools for the purpose of summarizing admissions, financial aid, and marketing data. Contributes to the development of reports and dashboards in Salesforce and Tableau. Aids with maintenance and enhancements to dashboard functionality, content, and features.

Develops and maintains data and business process documentation in written and visual forms to ensure continuity. Ensures that documentation is maintained and accurately represents current processes. Effectively translates technical procedures to forms of documentation that are understandable to non-experts.
