Job Purpose |
The Collections and Outreach Coordinator manages the collections of the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History (the Museum) and the Department of Geology & Environmental Geosciences (the Department) and leads the outreach and promotion of
our programs to the public. Collection management responsibilities include organizing and cataloging new and preexisting specimens, coordinating specimen loans to and visits from external researchers, fossil preparation, training and supervising docents and
volunteer fossil preparators, molding and casting, assisting in the digitization of specimens, and overseeing operation of the 3D printer. |
Minimum Requirements |
High school diploma and 2 years of relevant experience is required. A college degree and prior museum experience is highly preferred. Additional preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor’s or higher degree in museum studies pertaining to earth and natural history, or in any science program directly relevant to paleontology and/or
the geosciences. Public outreach, supervisory, accounting, and office management experience preferred. Fossil preparation and grant writing experience are also highly desirable. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities |
Requires exceptional organizational, time management, communication and public engagement skills. Basic knowledge of biological taxonomy and vertebrate anatomy is essential. Basic fossil preparation skills essential. Must have the ability
to use MS Office software suite. Ability to supervise and direct student employees (museum docents) is essential. Knowledge of website maintenance and social media marketing is important. Must be willing to learn web authoring and help in maintaining a website.
Must also be willing to learn 3D modeling software and digitization techniques. Required ability to earn and maintain adherence to the university’s Minor Policy protocols. Must work well with diverse populations, including students, faculty, staff, and members
of the public of all ages. Ability to routinely and safely lift 35 lbs. |
Additional Comments Regarding Position |
This position is the first point of contact for members of the public and students, faculty, and staff who wish to engage with the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History at the College of Charleston. Must be able to demonstrate strong interpersonal
skills and to work effectively with others. Some evening and weekend events with associated travel required (approximately 3-4 days per quarter). |

engagement and tours. Documents and tracks visitor activity and education services provided to the public (tours, educational group visits, and off-campus activities). Designs and implements outreach activities in consideration with K-12 and university curriculum
standards. Manages reporting of departmental program activities, preparation of proposals for grant applications, manages departmental volunteer and visiting scholars program related to the Museum and the Department’s public engagement activities. |
