Job Purpose |
General Counsel reports to the President and is one of the President’s chief advisors. Also serves as legal counsel to the Senior Team. This position supervises the College’s Office of Legal Affairs and, as necessary, selects and supervises
outside legal counsel in consultation with the President. |
Minimum Requirements |
Minimum qualifications for this position are a Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited law school, at least five years of experience as an attorney or judge, legal or professional experience in higher education
or both, licensed to practice law in South Carolina, strong written and oral communication skills, and evidence of a capacity for the successful supervision of attorneys and office staff. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education
are encouraged to apply. |
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities |
Preferred qualifications for this position are ten plus years of legal and professional experience; special expertise in higher education law or labor and employment law; previous experience in the management
of other attorneys and office staff in an organizational setting; previous involvement with state and/or federal government legislative and administrative processes; and five or more years of experience as an attorney or judge. Relevant work experience in
a public university setting is desired. The position is responsible for managing the College’s legal affairs and the provision of legal services to the various College offices. The position requires familiarity with many practice areas, including faculty
and student issues, tax law, labor and employment law, copyright law and intellectual property, real estate law, environmental law, and legal issues relevant to information technology, as those practice areas apply to various university settings. |
Additional Comments Regarding Position |
General Counsel will be a person of unimpeachable personal integrity. Will be expected to participate in continuing legal education through membership in the relevant bar associations and the National Association of College and University
Attorneys. |

Activity |
Manages the College’s legal affairs and the provision of legal services to the various College offices. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: bringing legal matters and concerns to the attention of the President and the SeniorTeam;
negotiating, drafting, and reviewing contracts and other legal documents; conducting compliance reviews and audits relevant to state and federal laws and regulations; providing advice relevant to state and federal regulations; drafting and revising university
policies and procedures; offering advice concerning risk management; providing legal counsel relevant to the creation of a diverse and inclusive campus community; providing reports and updates to the Board of Trustees; and serving as legal counsel to various
