Job Purpose

The Director of Analytics serves as the lead data and research analyst for the College of Charleston’s Enrollment Planning division. The Director is responsible for ensuring that Enrollment Planning leadership is empowered with analytics and information required to make effective data-driven decisions, achieve the College’s enrollment goals, and contribute to successful strategic plan implementation. Primary duties include business intelligence development, data analysis and modeling, data pipeline construction, mentoring and supervision, and process documentation. This role is collaborative with multiple offices across campus including Admissions, Financial Aid, University Marketing, and Institutional Research.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics, or relevant field. Work experience in data management, data analysis, and/or business intelligence or analytics, preferably in a higher education setting. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Required

  • Experience creating reports and dashboards using business intelligence tools such as Cognos, Argos, and Tableau
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications, especially Excel (intermediate to advanced), Teams, SharePoint, and PowerPoint
  • Programming proficiency in an object-oriented computing language (e.g., R, Python)
  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts
  • Ability to analyze and distill complex datasets for use in presentations and written reports
  • Superior attention to detail when analyzing datasets and developing data processes
  • Aptitude for developing innovative ideas for research and analysis, both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to be proactive in a fast-paced environment and effectively prioritize competing requests and tasks
  • Talent for identifying and executing enhancements to improve efficiency of data and business processes
  • Self-motivated to learn new skills and seek professional development opportunities
  • Passion for collaborating with team members stakeholders to achieve shared goals

Preferred

  • Experience working within a higher education CRM system (e.g., Salesforce)
  • Experience building data pipelines using ETL tools (e.g., Informatica, Tableau Prep Builder)
  • Successful supervisory or mentoring experience

Business intelligence development

Leads and directs reporting efforts in Salesforce, Cognos Analytics, Argos, and other reporting tools to provide summary reports of admissions, financial aid, and marketing data. Develops innovative and dynamic dashboards in Salesforce and Tableau. Maintains and enhances dashboard content and functionality to satisfy end user needs and preferences. Collaborates with other campus offices to fulfill reporting needs requested from multiple internal stakeholders and external partners.

Data analysis and modeling

Collaborates with team members and colleagues to analyze higher education data sets, both public and proprietary. Implements innovative statistical modeling techniques to predict and forecast applications and enrollments. Maintains and enhances custom and complex statistical programs for simulating enrollment outcomes and proposed policy changes based on numerous input variables. Assesses marketing efforts and financial aid strategies to determine ROI; makes objective recommendations for resource re-allocation as appropriate. Responsible for the Enrollment Planning division’s accreditation-related assessment. Creates and contributes to survey development for distribution to staff and prospective students. Fulfills ad hoc data analysis requests as needed. Monitors national higher education trends to inform internal analyses and directives.

Data pipeline construction

Collaborates with team members, colleagues, IT personnel, and external partners to build automated data pipelines for exchanging data and information. Contributes to pipeline development using business intelligence (e.g., Cognos, Argos) and ETL (e.g., Informatica, Tableau Prep Builder) tools. Develops and maintains business processes for storing and archiving historical data files as necessary. Creates reports and contributes to the development of processes designed to enhance harmonization and quality control between the College’s multiple data systems.

Mentoring and supervision

Mentors and supervises up to one permanent staff and one or more student employees. Coaches team members with various strategies based on their level of experience. Evaluates performance periodically throughout the annual review process. Develops and presents trainings designed to mentor colleagues in Admissions, Financial Aid, and other campus offices to promote self-sufficiency in basic data report creation and results interpretation.

Develops and maintains data and business process documentation in written and visual forms to ensure continuity. Ensures that documentation is maintained and accurately represents current processes. Effectively translates technical procedures to forms of documentation that are understandable to non-experts.
