Job Purpose

Receives, distributes and delivers all USPS and inter-campus mail to individuals and/or departments for a large urban college campus. Postal Specialists are responsible for processing all classes and types of mail received at the college including incoming, outgoing, and inter-campus. Must to understand all task specific processes and procedures regarding mail processing and pertinent USPS mailing regulations. Must be able to work within a team framework; share and communicate information to team members and management; and use independent judgment and problem solving within the scope of their tasks.

Minimum Requirements

High School Diploma and one year of experience in postal, courier, or delivery operations is required. A Bachelor’s Degree may be substituted for work experience. Good verbal communication and customer service skills. Must possess a valid SC driver’s license with a clean driving record. Must pass SLED check. Must also qualify through safe driving courses provided by the college. Should show good judgment and have the ability to follow work procedures. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Experience in handling mail is preferred and knowledge of mail handling regulations a plus. Knowledge or skill in the operation of postal meters and scales is helpful. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. It is essential that employee is trustworthy and reliable. Must provide excellent customer service to campus clients and keep communication lines open.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

Must maintain a safe and secure work environment and keeps work space clean and organized. Must be physically able to work in all types of weather conditions and handle up to 70 pounds with assistance. Must be physically able to use stairs and walk on uneven walkways.

1. Unloads and sorts incoming letters, flats, and parcels by delivery routes, separating accountable items for appropriate handling. Operates delivery van or approved vehicle for pick-up and delivery of mail. Verifies and scans every accountable item delivered and receives signature from addressee or approved agent on hand held device. Ensures that all mail collected for posting is prepared in accordance with postal policies and requirements. Reports to supervisor any unusual conditions / problems relating to delivery or changes in a department that may require changes in assigned route. Responsible for daily maintenance of vehicle and detailing daily mileage log in vans.

2. Processes and weighs outgoing mail using electronic and computerized mailing machines, meters, and printers. Reads and interprets USPS manuals to determine appropriate cost and requirements for domestic and international mail.
