Job Purpose |
Deputy Director for Energy Plant Operations directs the complex operation, repair and maintenance of the Central Energy Facility and equipment which generates and distributes chilled water and steam to and from major buildings on the College
of Charleston campus. Functions as working supervisor and is responsible for all maintenance and operation of the mechanical/industrial equipment at Central Energy associated with the gas and oil fired high pressure boilers, heat exchangers, centrifugal chillers,
chilled water units, condensers, pumps and valves. Also responsible for associated plumbing and fuel systems, high voltage electrical distribution centers, underground steam and chill water piping and all mechanical rooms in College buildings. |
Minimum Requirements |
Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology or relevant field and master-level work experience in Industrial Energy Systems Operations, maintenance and management of pressure systems and related mechanical equipment, specifically, boiler
programmers and safety circuits. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology preferred. Position requires industrial work center supervisory experience as well. Must have a valid SC driver’s license as the employee will be required to drive state vehicles
to transport equipment &/or personnel when needed. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply. |
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities |
Extensive knowledge of operation, installation, repair and maintenance of industrial equipment, such as steam and chill water systems, and air conditioning systems required. Considerable knowledge of mechanical equipment, pipe fitting,
electricity and machinery required. Must have extensive knowledge of boiler safety circuits and programmer systems. Thorough understanding of emergency recovery of boiler systems after shut-down and capability to supervise safe troubleshooting of control circuits.
Must have knowledge of licensing and inspection requirements for high pressure boilers in public institutions. |
Additional Comments Regarding Position |
Must be physically able to perform duties as described. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds and perform physically demanding, repetitive tasks. Must be physically able to enter confined spaces, such as manholes, to perform and/or oversee
maintenance and inspection duties. Must be able to climb and work on high ladders and scaffolding. This position requires the ability to lift and use heavy equipment and tools. May be exposed to extreme temperatures, humidity, and noisy conditions. May be
in contact with hazardous materials requiring the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). |

1. Directs the operation, repair and maintenance of the Central Energy Facility at the College. As the stationary engineer, ensures compliance with inspection requirements for boiler operations. Directs the disassembly and reassembly of
boilers and annual inspections required by State LLR and insurance company. Ensures the proper operation of the Energy Management System (EMS) for the campus and all mechanical rooms. In conjunction with
the Director of EH&S and the Director of Utility Services, develops, implements, and enforces policies and procedures for all emergency situations and for the safety and security of all equipment, machinery, and persons. Establishes the preventive maintenance
schedules and ensures compliance. Confers with the appropriate parties to troubleshoot and resolve problems. Reviews operation to ensure efficient use of resources and minimize energy costs. Ensures that equipment maintenance and repair performed by outside
contractors is appropriately monitored to ensure work is performed to standard trade practice and in accordance with purchase order. |
