Cougars Look to Solidify Playoff Hopes at Elon

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston heads into the homestretch of the CAA season at Elon on Saturday with an opportunity to increase its chances for a berth in the conference tournament. Kickoff at Rudd Field is at 1 p.m.

The Cougars are tied for fourth place with Drexel with 11 points, trailing the Phoenix (16), UNCW (14) and Hofstra (13). It won’t be an easy final two games for Charleston as it wraps up the regular season on the road against the Pride on October 29.

The top six teams qualify for the postseason, and the Cougars are looking to advance for the first time since 2017.

Charleston is 3-2-2 in the CAA (5-5-4 overall) after defeating Northeastern, 1-0, in its most recent conference match. Elon has already clinched a tournament berth and is 9-3-2 and 5-1-1 in the league. The Phoenix are coming off a 3-0 win over North Carolina on Tuesday.

Cougar freshman Chris Elliott and Phoenix senior Mason Duval are two of the top goal scorers in the CAA. Elliott is fourth in the league with seven, and Duval is tied for fifth with six. Elliott is also tied for fifth in points (15) and stands eighth in shots on goal (14).

Charleston and Elon players also hold five of the top 10 spots in assists. Freshman Leonardo D’Ambrosio leads the Cougars and is tied for fourth in the CAA along with Elon’s Scott Vatne with five. Charleston’s Chris Matlashewski and Elon’s Kasper Lehm and Vemund Hole Vik each have four assists.

The Cougar duo of Olly Marshall and Justin Bauer have combined for five shutouts. Elon’s Ryan Bilichuk leads the CAA in goals against average (0.50) and shutouts (9) while ranking second in save percentage (.811).
