Cougars Drop CAA Decision to Towson   

 

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Towson scored both its goals in the second half in a 2-0 win over College of Charleston in a CAA match Thursday night at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point. 

 

The loss drops the Cougars into a tie for seventh in the conference with seven points (2-2-1) while the Tigers are tied for fifth with eight points (2-1-2). The top eight teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the CAA Tournament with the first four earning quarterfinal home games. 

 

Charleston (8-5-1 overall) outshot Towson, 14-11, and earned six corner kicks to only one for the Tigers. But it was the visitors who were able to crack the scoreboard, beginning with the game winner by Phoebe Canoles in the 54th minute. 

 

“This was not our night. Towson played well, and we never really found our rhythm,” said head coach Christian Michner. “There were too many fouls, and it made the game very start-stop with all the restarts. We will need to regroup quickly and get ready for another big game on Sunday.” 

 

Nia Christopher, the leading scorer in the CAA with 10 goals, gave Towson an insurance tally in the 70th minute. Savannah Barron made three saves for the Cougars, and Riley Melendez stopped six shots for Towson. Olivia Freitas led Charleston with three shots, and Grace Powell had two on target. 

 

Charleston remains home for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday against Elon. The Phoenix enter one point behind the Cougars and Stony Brook in the CAA standings.
