Cougars Drop 2-1 Decision at USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – College of Charleston dominated statistically but came up short in a 2-1 loss at USC Upstate in a non-conference game on Tuesday night.

The Cougars (2-2-2) outshot the Spartans, 20-11, including 13-3 in the second half and took six corners to two for Upstate. A goal by Brody Williams in the 74th minute snapped a tie, and Charleston was unable to match it despite taking six shots in the final 14 minutes.

Leonardo D’Ambrosio continued his scoring surge for the Cougars, tying the game in the 39th minute with his third goal in the past four games. The reigning CAA Offensive Player of the Week led Charleston with seven shots including four on target.

Chris Matlashewski assisted on the goal, his second of the year, and had three shots along with Iker Carew. Olly Marshall was forced to make only one save, and Luca Bulfon had seven for the Spartans.

After Upstate took the lead, D’Ambrosio took two shots in the 76th minute, but one was saved by Bulfon and the other was blocked. He had three more shots the rest of the way, including one in the 89th minute in which Lucas Cedermark secured the rebound but fired wide left.

The Cougars return home to CAA play on Saturday with a road contest at Drexel.
