Cougars Coast Past SC State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Mary Alexander and Hannah Stanhope both scored two goals as College of Charleston cruised to a 7-0 win over South Carolina State on Sunday in Orangeburg.

Grace Powell, Faith Slimmer and Sophie Saunders also found the back of the net to help the Cougars win their second in a row and improve to 4-2. Alexander added an assist to give her five points on the day.

Powell’s goal was her team-leading fourth of the season and 10th of her career. She has three goals in the past two games including both tallies in a 2-0 home win over Longwood on Friday. Stanhope, a junior, had the first goals of her career, with one coming on a penalty kick.

Sanders scored her first collegiate goal to round out the Charleston attack. Bubbles Dever had two assists to tie Slimmer for the team lead with three, and Maiya Parrous also had an assist.

The Cougar defense also dominated and did not allow the Bulldogs to get off a shot.

“Today was another strong performance from the Cougars. We created plenty of chances and didn’t give away any so that’s very positive,” said head coach Christian Michner.

“Everyone who was fit and healthy to play got in the game and gave a good account of themselves. All in all it was a great experience and happy to come home with a win.”

The Cougars return home on Wednesday to face Charleston Southern. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
