COUGARS SPLIT WITH GRIZZLIES, BUCS FRIDAY

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- College of Charleston opened the day with a sweep of Montana on Friday morning before falling to host Charleston Southern in straight sets to conclude the evening session on day one of the 2022 CSU Chucktown Throwdown.

Charleston (4-8) opened the day with its third sweep victory of the season after defeating Montana (5-5) by scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-16. The Cougars held the Grizzlies to a .010 hitting percentage while combining for 37 kills and 10 blocks in the sweep. Charleston Southern (6-6) defeated the Cougars by scores of 31-29, 29-27 and 25-10 combining for a .296 hitting percentage while limiting Charleston to a .192 clip on the attack.

Critical Point
With Charleston ahead, 25-24, and serving for the first set win Charleston Southern answered with back-to-back kills to seize the advantage, 26-25. The Cougars would fight off four set points over the next several minutes before the Bucs closed out the frame, 31-29, with back-to-back points.

Key Cougars

  *   Gabi Bailey paced the Cougars with 28 kills on the day. She put down 12 against Montana and followed with 18 kills and 10 digs against the Bucs to account for her 16th career double-double.
  *   Senior Claire Campbell finished the day with 19 kills and a .406 hitting percentage.
  *   Sophomore Tynley Smeltzer led the team with 32 digs averaging 5.33 per set.
  *   Emma Appleman and Jasmin Goei dished out 39 and 32 assists, respectively.
  *   Emma Falk paced the Cougars at the net with 15 blocks tying her career-high with nine against CSU.


Match Notes

  *   Campbell finished the day with five blocks, including four against Montana, to pass the 250-mark for her career.
  *   Appleman turned in her 10th career double-double with 14 assists and 10 digs against Montana.
  *   Friday’s setback to Charleston Southern is just the eighth time the Bucs have defeated the Cougars in 46 all-time meetings.
  *   The match with Charleston Southern featured 32 ties and 15 lead changes.

Up Next
The Cougars will close out the weekend and their non-conference schedule on Saturday when CofC squares off against UNC Greensboro at 1:00 p.m. at the CSU Fieldhouse.
