CHARLESTON OPENS CAMPAIGN WITH TWO WINS

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston sailing team opened the 2022-23 season in impressive form turning in a pair of dominating victories at the SAISA Top Nine Invite and the SAISA North Fall Tournament over the weekend. Charleston cruised to an 86-point win at the SAISA Top Nine Invite on its home waters and added a second victory at the SAISA North Fall Tournament in Wilmington, N.C.

The Cougars finished the SAISA Top Nine Invite with 135 points from 14 rotations beating out second-place Miami’s total of 221 points. Brandon Geller skippered Charleston to a 45-point win in A-Division with Anna Sherry crewing. Geller and Sherry turned in 12 top-five finishes including five race wins. Axel Stordahl and Lucy Klempen won B-Division by 41 points with six top-five’s and five race victories.

Charleston collected its second win of the weekend with a 13-point victory at the SAISA North Fall Tournament in Wilmington, N.C. The Cougars amassed 13 points from three rotations beating out North Carolina State and UNCW which tied for second with 26 points. Ethan Homberger and Grace Beard delivered a win in all three B-Division races while Fredrikke Foss and Garrett Grenauer accumulated 10 points in A-Division.

The Cougars’ offshore team placed fourth and 13th at MUSC’s Hollings Cup while raising $2,540 for cancer research.

Charleston returns to the water next weekend with three regattas on the calendar. The Cougars’ dinghy team will compete at the SAISA Singlehanded Championships on Saturday and Sunday in Daytona Beach, Fla. and SAISA North Top Six on Saturday in Atlanta, Ga. Charleston’s offshore team will travel to Annapolis, Md. for the Shields Trophy at Navy on Saturday and Sunday.
