CHARLESTON FALLS TO RUTGERS SATURDAY

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston volleyball team fell to Rutgers in straight sets Saturday evening to conclude the weekend at the CofC Classic.

Rutgers (3-0) won the match by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-23 compiling a .276 hitting percentage for the evening with 49 kills. The Scarlet Knights held College of Charleston (2-1) to a .179 clip on the attack while handing the Cougars their first loss of the season.

Critical Point
With Charleston holding a 14-9 lead in the second set, Rutgers posted four straight blocks to spark an 8-0 run that put the Scarlet Knights in front, 17-14. The Scarlet Knights would go on to win the set, 25-21, before completing the sweep in set three.

Key Cougars

  *   Claire Campbell continued her torrid start to the season collecting eight kills on 16 swings without an error.
  *   Sofie Vogel turned in a stellar performance of her own with eight kills, three blocks and a .400 hitting percentage.
  *   Gabi Bailey posted her second double-double of the young season with 10 kills and 12 digs.
  *   Emma Appleman and Jasmin Goei dished out 21 and 15 assists, respectively.
  *   Tynley Smeltzer paced the back row with 19 digs.


Match Notes

  *   The Cougars put down a season-high 18 kills in the first set including six from Bailey.
  *   Rutgers’ Taylor Humphrey led all hitters with 18 kills. Alissa Kinkela added 14 while hitting .333.
  *   Campbell and Bailey were each named to the CofC Classic All-Tournament Team.
