DORTON ELEVATED TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH/CO-RECRUITING COORDINATOR

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- College of Charleston baseball head coach Chad Holbrook announced the promotion of fifth-year assistant coach and alumnus Will Dorton ‘15 to Associate Head Coach/Co-Recruiting Coordinator Tuesday.

A native of Lugoff, SC, Dorton has spent the last five seasons at his alma mater as the pitching coach transforming the Cougars’ staff into one of the nations’ best. The Cougars have ranked amongst the top 30 teams in WHIP in four of the last five seasons while also finishing in the top 20 in ERA three times in that span.

“Will is a tremendous coach and a very gifted recruiter,” Holbrook said. “He has a great work ethic, is extremely loyal and loves The College. He has done an incredible job with our pitchers and helped them perform year in and year out. He is very deserving of this promotion and we are lucky to have him at The College.”

Dorton has coached three pitchers (Griffin McLarty, Nathan Ocker and Evan Sisk) selected in the MLB Draft since his arrival as well as two others (Caswell Smith, Jordan Carr) who signed with professional teams.

Three Cougars have ranked among the top-15 nationally in ERA during his tenure, including William Privette who led the nation with a program and CAA single-season record mark of 0.91 in 2022. The sophomore right-hander also led the nation in both WHIP (0.78) and hits allowed per nine innings (4.70) while becoming the program’s second-ever consensus All-American. Privette was also named the CAA Pitcher of the Year and earned the distinction of being the first pitcher in CAA history to be selected as a finalist for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year award.

Dorton has mentored nine All-CAA pitchers during his tenure including a trio of first-team selections (Privette, Good and McLarty) as well as a pair of All-Americans in Privette and McLarty.

He began his coaching career at Camden American Legion. Dorton then spent with one season at Hanahan High School and one season at Blythewood High School before jumping to the collegiate ranks at Florence-Darlington Tech. There, he helped the Stingers amass a 42-19 record and the program’s first NJCAA World Series appearance.
