CHARLESTON, S.C. – Twenty College of Charleston track and field athletes will compete in 12 events at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships beginning Friday in Boston.

On the first day, Cougar athletes will compete in the pole vault and trials in the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500 and 400 hurdles. Saturday’s schedule includes runners who qualify for the finals as well as competition in the 5000, 4x100 and 4x400 relays, shot put and discus.

Field Events

Four athletes who rank in the top 10 in the CAA in their events will compete this weekend.

Luzy Lieger looks to move up one spot from her runner-up finish at last year’s conference meet. She has the fourth-longest jump in the CAA this season and owns the school record at 4.00m (13 feet, 1 ½) inches.

Chloe Christian and Tonet Tallie rank 2-3 in school history and are tied for eighth in the CAA through the regular season at 3.65m (11 feet, 11 ¾ inches). Christian has a PR of 3.80m (12 feet, 5 ½ inches) which she established with her third-place finish at the 2019 conference meet.

Logan Gray is fifth in the CAA this season and fourth in the Cougar record book with a top shot put throw of 13.21m (43 feet, 4 ¼ inches). She is also 11th in the conference and third in school history in the discus at 41.95m (137 feet, 7 inches).

Sprints/Hurdles

Kaitlynn Bailey headlines the Cougar sprinters and will be competing in three events. She enters the meet ranked third in school history in the 100 (12.37), seventh in the 200 (25.40) and ninth in the 400 (58.65). Bailey is also slated to run legs in both relays.

Alicia Wilson will join Bailey in the 100 and 200. Laurie Fogleman and Gianna Cucinotta are entered in the 200 and 400, and Asiah Gadson is in the 400 hurdles field.

Mid-Distance/Distance

The Cougars have several athletes who could potentially score at the middle distances, including Kacey Smekrud, Emily Dorony, Cate Ambrose, Kristen Cherry and Rhian Purves.

Smekrud is currently fifth in the Charleston record book in the 800 (2:15.77), three spots ahead of Dorony (2:17.11). The 1500 field includes three runners in the top 10. Ambrose leads that group in third (4:36.66) followed by Cherry (fifth, 4:39.13) and Purves (sixth, 4:39.60).

Meike Kalus, Grace McGrew and Olivia Kneski are also competing in the 800, and Sophia Brown and Shannon Smith are running the 1500.

In addition to the 1500, Ambrose and Cherry will join Morgan Summey in the 5000. Ambrose is also in the record book at this distance, standing seventh with a top time of 17:48.24.
