Cougars Take Down Hofstra in Dramatic Fashion at CAA Tournament

ELON, N.C. – The College of Charleston dropped a 5-0 decision to host Elon on Thursday morning and then bounced back for a 6-5 win in nine innings over Hofstra to stay alive in the CAA Tournament at the Hunt Softball Park.

The Cougars and Phoenix will play again on Friday at 11:30 a.m. in an elimination game. The winner of that contest will play a second game later in the afternoon for a chance to move on to the championship round.

The game against Hofstra was tied 2-2 through eight when the Cougars exploded for four runs. Noel Dominguez led off with a walk and scored on a throwing error on an Aniz Roman bunt. Jenna Helberg made it 4-2 on an RBI single, and Mia Dittoe followed with a two-run triple.

The insurance runs proved crucial when Madison McKevitt hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off starter Payton Lemire. Hofstra then put a runner on second with two outs, and Carli McCants came in get a strikeout to preserve the victory.

Lemire surrendered single runs in the first and second before tossing six innings of shutout ball to allow Charleston to rally. The Cougars cut their deficit in half in the fourth on a double by Payton Wade and RBI single by Noel Dominguez and tied it in the sixth on a Dittoe double and wild pitch.

Dittoe added a single for her third career three-hit game, and Helberg and Wade also had two hits.

Three Elon pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout in the first game of the tournament. The Phoenix scored the only run it would need in the first and added two more in the third and fourth to hand McCants the loss.

Dominguez reached base three time with a triple and two walks.
