Postseason Hopes Get Huge Boost in Sweep of Towson

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston moved closer to a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association playoffs with a doubleheader sweep of Towson on Saturday at Patriots Point.

The 2-0 and 7-1 victories over the Tigers improved the Cougars to 6-10 in the CAA, two wins ahead of Towson and Drexel in the race for the final spot in the tournament. The Dragons dropped a doubleheader to Hofstra on Saturday.

The Cougars and Tigers wrap up their series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, Jenna Carter, Riley Miller and Carli McCants will be honored as part of Senior Weekend ceremonies.

McCants and Mia Dittoe powered Charleston to the game one win, with McCants continuing her red-hot pitching. She tossed a four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts, and in her last four starts has given up only nine hits and two runs (one earned) with 32 strikeouts over 23.2 innings.

Dittoe provided the offense, following a Jenna Helberg single in the fourth with her fourth home run of the season. McCants did not allow a base runner the rest of the way and set down the final 13 Tigers she faced. She had three innings with two or three strikeouts and lowered her ERA to 2.37 on the season.

The Cougars spotted Towson a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game before scoring three times in the third. Carter walked and came around to score on a passed ball to tie it, and consecutive singles by Payton Wade, Dittoe, Shealyn Starks and Noel Dominguez followed, the latter two driving in runs.

Charleston blew it open in the sixth on a bases loaded walk to Helberg, a two-run throwing error and another Dittoe RBI on a single.

Payton Lemire was the beneficiary of the 10-hit attack, going the distance and allowing five hits while striking out five.
