CHARLESTON SPLITS WITH UNCW, STEPHEN F. AUSTIN SATURDAY AT ASUN CHAMPIONSHIP

 

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- The College of Charleston beach volleyball team salvaged a Saturday split with a 4-1 win over Stephen F. Austin after falling to UNCW, 4-1, to head into the final day of pool play on Sunday with a 3-1 record for the weekend at the 2022 ASUN Championship hosted at the John Hunt Sports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Fourth-seeded UNCW jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the Cougars’ first match of the day, clinching the dual with a trio of straight-set victories at threes, fours and fives. The Cougars would secure a point with a gritty three-set win by Amani Dunston and Sofie Vogel in the second flight before UNCW rallied for a three-set victory of its own in the top flight.

 

Charleston bounced back against ninth-seeded Stephen F. Austin in the afternoon session with four straight-set wins at twos through fives. The Cougars were unable to secure the sweep as the Ladyjacks rallied for a three-set win in the top pairing.

 

PAIR OF THE DAY

Dunston and Vogel tallied two victories to lead the way for the Cougars including a 21-16, 21-14 win in the second flight against Stephen F. Austin. The duo also rallied for a 19-21, 21-18, 15-8 victory to capture the Cougars’ lone point against UNCW.

 

NOTABLES

·      With their victory against Stephen F. Austin, Gabi Bailey and Kyra Thompson moved into a tie for first on the single-season pairs wins list with their 22nd win of the season.

·      Dunston collected the 39th and 40th victories of her career on Saturday to move into a tie for eighth all-time alongside Sky Benjamin.

·      Thompson posted her 37th career win in the second match of the day to move into sole possession of 10th on the all-time individual wins list.

·      The Cougars head into Sunday’s final day of pool play sitting third in Pool A behind No. 1 Stetson and No. 4 UNCW.
