COUGARS HIT THE ROAD FOR MIDWEEK MATCHUP WITH SPARTANS TUESDAY

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston baseball team will make the trip up I-26 to Spartanburg on Tuesday to take on USC Upstate in midweek action. First pitch is slated for 6:00 pm at Harley Park.

 

Charleston delivered its third series sweep in CAA play over the weekend taking all three from William & Mary to move into sole possession of first place in the league standings at the midway point of the conference slate. USC Upstate swept Charleston Southern over the weekend to move to 10-5 in Big South play.

 

SERIES SNAPSHOT

The Cougars lead the all-time series, 6-5 after USC Upstate swept a weekend series at Patriots Point early last season. Charleston had won the previous three matchups between the in-state foes.

LEADING OFF

·         The Cougars secured their third straight home sweep in CAA play over the weekend to take a 2.5 game lead at the top of the conference standings halfway through the league schedule.

·         Sophomore William Privette has been nothing short of spectacular out of the 'pen this season entering the week ranked second in the nation with a 0.93 ERA while leading the CAA with seven saves. He earned both a win and a save in 4.2 shutout innings over two appearances in the sweep of William & Mary to earn CAA Pitcher of the Week accolades.

·         Charleston's offense has not shied from the big moments of late with four comeback victories in the Cougars' last six games including three walk-off victories.

·         The Cougars have been lethal with two outs this season accounting for more than 36 percent of their total run production with two men down.

·         Graduate student Sam Cochrane has been swinging a red-hot bat over the last 20 games batting .368 in that span to raise his season batting average from .148 to .305. The Ocala, Fla. native has also driven in 15 runs in the last 10 games including six in the series sweep of James Madison.

·         Sam Cochrane, Trotter Harlan and JT Marr have been outstanding in the first half of the CAA schedule combining for 41 of the Cougars' 75 RBI thus far. Five Cougars are currently hitting at least .300 in league play led by Cam Dean's .333 clip.

·         Charleston has enjoyed great success in the opening frame this season combining for a .327 batting average while outscoring its opponents, 36-5, in the first inning. The Cougars are 13-3 when plating at least one run in the opening frame.

 

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

·         USC Upstate enters the week with a 21-15 overall record and a 15-6 mark at home.

·         The Spartans rank fifth in the nation in hit by pitch (74) and 19th in total hits (378).

·         Noah Sullivan paces the Spartans with a .350 batting average while Devin Buckner is batting .336 with four home runs and 32 RBI.

·         Noah Rabon and Cameron Macintosh have driven in 34 and 32 runs, respectively.
