CHARLESTON PLACES SECOND AT SAISA WOMEN’S FLEET RACE CHAMPIONSHIPS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. --- Grace Squires and Kalea Woodard delivered a five-point victory in B-Division to propel the College of Charleston sailing team to a second-place finish at the SAISA Women’s Spring Fleet Race Championship on Saturday to secure a berth in the ICSA Women’s National Championships next month. The Cougars also placed third at the SAISA Women’s Team Race Championships and sixth at the J70 Invite #3 offshore event.

Charleston placed second at the SAISA Women’s Spring Fleet Race Championship in St. Petersburg, Fla. with 100 points including 24 in B-Division. Squires and Woodard turned in six top-three performances including a race victory in the sixth rotation. Kiera O’Reardon and Emma Tallman each skippered four rotations in A-Division leading the Cougars to 76 points. Lucy Klempen, Anna Sherry and Roxanne Snyder each crewed at least two races.

The Cougars added a third-place finish at the SAISA Women’s Team Race Championship with a 5-4 record two wins behind regatta champion South Florida. Charleston posted a 2-1 mark in both rounds one and three coupled with a victory against Eckerd in round two. Squires, Tallman, O’Reardon and Fredrikke Foss each skippered at least three races for the Cougars with Woodard, Sherry, Klempen and Snyder rotating at crew.

Charleston capped the weekend placing sixth at the J70 Invite #3 on Saturday and Sunday in New London, Conn. with 72 points. Emily Potter skippered for the Cougars with John McCarthy, Skye Ehrhart and Maggie Wilcox at crew. The Cougars accumulated seven top-five finishes including a quartet of third-place performances.

The Cougars will return to the water for a trio of regattas next weekend including two conference championships at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex. Charleston will host the SAISA Coed Team Race Championships on Saturday and the SAISA Coed Fleet Race Championships on Sunday while also traveling to New London, Conn. for the Emily Wick Women’s Team Race on Saturday and Sunday.
