CHARLESTON RENEWS ACQUAINTANCES WITH BULLDOGS TUESDAY

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston baseball team will make the short trip across the Charleston peninsula on Tuesday to renew acquaintances with The Citadel in the first of two meetings between the Lowcountry foes. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Joe Riley Park.

 

Charleston collected its second CAA sweep and fourth overall this season with three straight wins over James Madison this past weekend. The Citadel were swept at Mercer over the weekend to begin SoCon play.

 

SERIES SNAPSHOT

The Cougars lead the all-time series, 56-41, and have won the last 18 meetings with the Bulldogs. Charleston defeated The Citadel, 10-3, in the teams’ last meeting on May 18, 2021 at Patriots Point.

LEADING OFF

·         The Cougars collected their second CAA sweep of the season and fourth overall with a sweep of James Madison this weekend. Charleston enters the week tied with William & Mary for first in the league with a 7-2 CAA mark through three weekends.

·         Charleston's clutch hitting was on full display in the weekend sweep of JMU highlighted by back-to-back walk-off victories on Saturday and Sunday. The Cougars scored 10 of their 23 runs with two outs while batting .382 (13-34) with runners in scoring position.

·         William Privette and Reed Parris have formed a dynamic duo in the Cougar bullpen combining for a 4-0 record, 1.21 ERA and six saves in more than 59 innings of work. Privette enters the week ranked sixth in the nation with a 1.06 ERA while Parris sports a WHIP of 0.72 in 25.1 innings across 12 appearances.

·         Graduate student Sam Cochrane has been superb over the past month reaching safely in 14 of the last 16 games to raise his batting average from .148 to .325. The Ocala, Fla. native has posted seven multi-hit games in that span and collected a team-high six RBI against JMU.

·         The Cardiac Cougars struck again in epic fashion over the weekend with back-to-back walk-off victories on Saturday and Sunday to secure a series sweep of James Madison. Charleston has now walked off with three victories this season sparked by three different players - Tyler Sorrentino, Cam Dean and Cochrane.

·          Junior Emmett Bice has taken a strong stride toward carving out a role in the 'pen for the Cougars with a 3.38 ERA and nine strikeouts in eight innings pitched thus far. The lanky right-hander delivered perhaps his best outing yet on Saturday tossing two shutout innings to earn his first collegiate victory.

 

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS

·         The Citadel carries a 17-13 overall record into the week following a weekend sweep at the hands of Mercer.

·         The Bulldogs enter the week ranked third in the nation in sacrifice bunts (28) and have drawn the third-most walks in the Southern Conference (148) thus far.

·         Ryan McCarthy paces the offense batting .320 with five home runs and 26 RBI through 30 games. Cole Simpson and Noah Mitchell have driven in 28 and 25 runs, respectively.

·         Tuesday starter Devin Beckley is 4-2 on the season with a 2.52 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 39.1 innings of work over 11 appearances.
