COUGARS SPLIT WITH GAMECOCKS, CHANTICLEERS AT CAROLINA CHALLENGE

 

CONWAY, S.C. --- The College of Charleston beach volleyball team split with No. 18 South Carolina and Coastal Carolina on Saturday to finish the weekend 2-2 at Coastal Carolina’s Carolina Challenge.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In the first match of the day, South Carolina opened the dual with straight-set wins at threes, fours and fives to secure the victory. Charleston top two pairings would force the Gamecocks to rally for a pair of three-set wins at ones and twos to complete the sweep.

 

The Cougars bounced back with a 3-2 win over Coastal Carolina in the second match of the day. After the teams split at fours and fives, Charleston’s first and third pairings delivered straight-set wins to clinch the dual for the Cougars.

 

PAIR OF THE DAY

Ella Reames and Sky Benjamin collected their seventh victory of the season to earn the clinching point for the Cougars against Coastal Carolina’s ones in the afternoon session. The duo would also push South Carolina’s top pairing to its limits in a 21-12, 18-21, 10-15 decision.

 

NOTABLES

·      Charleston’s 18 wins this season are good for second on the program’s single-season list and are three shy of tying the school record of 20 set in 2019.

·      Gabi Bailey and Kyra Thompson elevated their season record to 18-3 with a straight-set win at threes against Coastal Carolina.

·      With a three-set setback to Coastal’s fours, Emma Falk and Maria Zweig were held winless on a single weekend for the first time this season.

·      Mikaela Dougherty and Rebeca Olariu set the tone against Coastal Carolina with a 21-18, 24-22 win at fives.

NEXT UP

The Cougars will travel to Columbia, S.C. next weekend to close out the regular season at South Carolina’s Palmetto Invitational. Charleston will take on South Carolina on Friday at 11:00 am followed by a 3:00 pm bout with Georgia State.
