COUGARS RETURN HOME TO HOST JMU IN CAA PLAY

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston baseball team returns home this weekend to host James Madison in a crucial series early on in the CAA schedule with both squads amongst five programs tied for first in the conference standings after two weekends. First pitch for Friday’s series opener is slated for 6:00 p.m.

 

Charleston has dropped three of its last four after opening CAA play with a sweep of preseason favorite Northeastern while James Madison has won four of its last five following a series win against Elon last weekend.

 

SERIES SNAPSHOT

The Cougars lead the all-time series, 21-10, and have won seven of their last 10 meetings with the Dukes. Charleston and JMU split the season series in 2021 with each winning two of three on their home diamond.

 

PROBABLE PITCHERS

Friday | 6:00 pm ET: RHP Ty Good (3-3, 4.79) vs. RHP Justin Showalter (2-4, 5.01)

Saturday | 2:00 pm ET: RHP Daniel Brooks (2-2, 4.36) vs. LHP Liam McDonnell (4-0, 2.10)

Sunday | 1:00 pm ET: LHP Connor Campbell (3-0, 2.86) vs. TBD

 

LEADING OFF

·         The Cougars enter the weekend in a five-way tie for first in the CAA after two weekends of conference play. Charleston dropped two of three to the Pride last weekend despite holding a lead in each game, picking up its first win at Hofstra since 2014 on Saturday.

·         Junior Trotter Harlan has been a force in the lineup for the Cougars this season entering Friday's series opener leading the team in on-base percentage (.442) while ranking second in the league with 24 walks thus far.

·         Sophomore William Privette has been simply superb out of the bullpen so far this season entering the weekend ranked third in the nation with a 0.63 ERA in 28.2 innings of work. The 6-foot-6 right-hander is currently tied for the CAA lead with five saves.

·         The Cougars have deployed one of the most balanced offenses in the league thus far with five players driving in at least 13 runs led by JT Marr, Preston Hall and Trotter Harlan who have combined for 62 of CofC's 146 RBI to date.

·          Charleston has enjoyed great success in the opening frame this season combining for a .339 batting average while outscoring its opponents, 32-4, in the first inning. The Cougars are 11-2 when plating at least one run in the opening frame.

·         Connor Campbell has been superb at the back end of the weekend rotation entering the week with a 3-0 record with a 2.86 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 34.2 innings of work. The senior southpaw leads the team with three quality starts and is currently sixth in the CAA in ERA while walking only seven batters thus far.

 

SCOUTING THE DUKES

·         James Madison enters the series with a 17-11 overall record and a 4-2 mark in CAA play after taking two of three from Elon last weekend.

·         The Dukes lead the CAA and rank 13th in the nation with 163 walks drawn.

·         Chase DeLauter is third in the nation in on-base percentage (.574) and sixth in RBI per game (1.59). He was recently named to the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List.

·         Saturday starter Liam McDonnell carries a 4-0 record with a 2.10 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 30 innings of work thus far.

 

WEEKEND PROMOTIONS

·         Bark at the Park: Saturday’s game is the first Bark at the Park of the season! Fans are invited to bring their dogs to the game. A signed waiver and proof of vaccinations (rabies, DHHP, and Bordetella) is required. The waiver can be found here.

·         Smokin’ Gringos: The Smokin’ Gringos (https://www.smokingringosbbq.com) Food Truck will be on site on Saturday from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. They will be located down the third base line.

·         Sunday: Fans can play Baseball Bingo throughout the game on Sunday to win prizes.
