Cougars Drop CAA Opener to Drexel

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston erased a pair of first-half deficits before a goal early in the second stanza gave Drexel a 3-2 win in the CAA opener for both teams Thursday night.

The Cougars (6-4, 0-1 CAA) fell behind at the 9:16 mark but took just over a minute to create a 1-1 tie. Mary Alexander scored her fourth goal of the season, and Faith Slimmer moved into a tie with Bubbles Dever for the team lead with her fourth assist.

The Dragons (6-0-3, 1-0-0 CAA) retook the lead with six minutes left before intermission, but again the Cougar struck back. Abby Fisher intercepted a Drexel pass and scored her first career goal to make it a 2-2 game at halftime.

While the first half saw a total of 16 shots, including 10 by the Cougars, the second half was more of a defensive battle, with Drexel taking six shots to four for Charleston. The Dragons made one of those shots pay off in the 50th minute when Kylie Kutz scored what proved to be the game winner off a corner.

Delaney Dawes led the Cougars with three shots followed by Alexander, Slimmer and Grace Powell with two each.

Charleston continues its three-game homestand to start CAA play when Delaware visits Patriots Point for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.
