Bailey, Mid-Distance Runners Star at Duke Invitational



DURHAM, N.C. – Kaitlynn Bailey established PRs in three events and made moves up the College of Charleston record book in two of them, and the Cougar 800 and 1500 runners re-wrote school history to highlight the team’s showing at the Duke Invitational.



Bailey began her Saturday in the 400 and lowered her PR to 58.65, a mark that keeps her ninth in school history. A half hour later, she turned in a time of 12.37 in the 100 to move up from seventh to third and capped her day in the 200, debuting at No. 7 in Charleston annals by crossing in 25.40.



Bailey also ran a leg on the 4x100 relay team that finished in 49.84. She was joined in that event by Tonet Tallie, Alicia Wilson and Asiah Gadson.



The 1500 was run on Friday and featured three record book changes. Cate Ambrose led the way in 4:36.66, lowering her third-place time by well over a second. Kristen Cherry following in 4:39.13 to take over fifth in school history, and Rhian Purves inched up from seventh to sixth by finishing in 4:39.60.



Ambrose and Purves were joined by Kacey Smekrud and Emily Dorony in re-ordering the record book in the 800 on Saturday. Smekrud led the Cougar quartet with a time of 2:15.77 to climb from sixth place to fourth.



Ambrose debuted in the record book at the distance and is now fifth in 2:16.20. Dorony rose to seventh with a mark of 2:17.11 while Purves is ninth with a PR of 2:17.75.



The Cougars compete in their final regular season meet at Elon on April 23 before heading to Boston for the CAA Championships on May 6-7.
