COUGARS NOTCH THIRD WIN AT SAISA NORTH TOP 6



CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston sailing team continued its strong start to the 2022-23 campaign with its third regatta win of the fall at the SAISA North Top 6 Invite on Saturday while freshman Benjamin Dufour finished second at the SAISA Men’s Singlehanded Championship.



Charleston opened the weekend cruising to a nine-point victory at the SAISA North Top 6 Invite on Saturday in Atlanta, Ga. accumulating 22 points from six rotations. Diego Carvajal skippered the Cougars to a dominating performance in his collegiate debut with five race victories to win B-Division with seven points alongside freshman crew Anna Galli. Fellow rookies Harrison Thomson and Marina Dryer finished second in A-Division with 15 points.



At the SAISA Men’s Singlehanded Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla., Dufour paced four Cougars tying for first-place with 23 points from 10 rotations. The freshman put himself in contention for a berth to the ICSA National Championship with four straight race wins in rotations three through six and never finished lower than fourth. Junior Lawson Levine placed fourth with 50 points while Ethan Homberger and Alex Gonzalez finished sixth and seventh, respectively.



Junior Rowan Schanley led the way for the Cougars at the SAISA Women’s Singlehanded Championship placing sixth with 63 points including a high finish of fourth in the ninth rotation. Sophomore Emma Tallman finished seventh with 68 points.



Charleston’s offshore team rounded out the weekend with a sixth-place finish at the Shields Trophy Regatta on Saturday and Sunday in Annapolis, Md., accumulating 31 points from six races, including a victory in race two. Sam Rosenbaum drove for the Cougars Cougars with Sean Groskoph at main, Julianna Corso at primary trim on day one, Megan Fetterley at primary trim on day two, Braden Johnson at secondary trim, Kate Schmiege at pit, Evan Chenard at squirrel, Sims Whalen at mast and Caroline Williams at bow.



The Cougars return to the water next weekend with three regattas on the schedule. Charleston will host the SAISA Match Race Championships on Saturday, September 24 at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex, and will travel to the New Orleans, La. for the Sugar Bowl Coed and Women’s regattas on Saturday and Sunday as well as the Ashley River Open on Saturday in Charleston.
