Cougars Open CAA Play with Shutout of Delaware

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston earned its first win of the season in impressive style on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Delaware at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point in the CAA opener for both teams.

The Cougars (1-1-1) went in front in the 23rd minute when Chris Elliott scored his second goal of the young season, tucking a shot into the top center off an assist by Kane Ritchie.

It stayed that way until the early moments of the second half. In the 50th minute, Leonardo D’Ambrosio created a scoring opportunity but was denied by Alvin Halley, who pulled him down hard in the box. Halley was sent off with a red card, and D’Ambrosio converted the ensuing penalty kick for a 2-0 lead.

The Charleston defense was stellar throughout, allowing only seven shots and five on goal. Freshman Olly Marshall stopped all five and earned his first career win. Iker Carew had a team-high three of the Cougars’ 12 shots.

“I am happy with the way the boys played,” said head coach Keith Wiggans. “There were some other opportunities I wish we took advantage of, but at the end of the day we got a clean sheet and three points. It was a good way to start conference play.”

The Cougars are off until next Saturday when they play at UNCW in another CAA contest. Charleston returns home on September 17 against Monmouth.
