Cougars Celebrate Senior Day with Key Win Over Northeastern



MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston earned a crucial three points in its quest for a berth in the CAA Tournament with a 1-0 win over Northeastern on Saturday at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point.



The Cougars improved to 3-2-2 in the CAA and their 11 points currently place them in a tie for third pending the results of Saturday’s late games. Charleston is even with Drexel and UNCW and two points ahead of William & Mary with the Seahawks and Tribe meeting tonight at 7 p.m.



The top six teams at the end of the regular season two weeks from now qualify for the tournament.



Prior to the game, the men’s soccer program honored six players – Edin Aleckovic, Justin Bauer, Nick Burnz, Steven Cahill, Rio Murray and Cas Van Altena – who are playing their final season this fall.



Charleston (5-4-4 overall) drew a foul just outside the box in the 55th minute, and Iker Carew converted the ensuing free kick for his third goal of the season. Despite being outshot, 15-10, the Cougar defense made the lead stand up, with Justin Bauer making six saves for his second clean sheet of the year.



“I’m really happy with the boys’ effort today,” said head coach Keith Wiggans. “Northeastern is a good team, and we did a good job of limited their chances and creating our own. It was an important three points, and I’m proud of how the team worked for each other today.”



The victory kept the Cougars undefeated at home this season with five wins and two ties. They are on the road for their next two matches at Winthrop and Elon before returning home on October 25 against North Florida.
