Helberg, McCants Lead Cougars Past Dragons for First CAA Win of Season

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Jenna Helberg sparked a huge sixth inning rally with a two-run homer, and Carli McCants spun a five-hitter to lead College of Charleston to a 7-2 win over Drexel for its first CAA win of the season.

The Cougars trailed 2-1 before Carsten Puckett singled to start the sixth, and Helberg followed with her third home run of the season to put Charleston ahead. Two runs scored on errors before Natalie Windham capped the uprising with a single to plate two more.

McCants allowed a two-run homer in the first but blanked the Dragons on only four hits the rest of the way. She struck out a season-high eight and walked only two en route to her third win of the year.

“It was an outstanding team win. I was extremely proud of each one of them and their commitment to come back stronger today,” said Tracey Lynch, who picked up the first conference win of her head coaching career.

“They took pride in playing as a team and pride in the name on the front of their jersey. All 22 of them were locked in on coming back stronger and being better at the role they were given.”

In addition to her home run, Helberg doubled with one out in the fourth, and pinch runner Aniz Roman came across on a single by Mia Dittoe to cut the Cougars’ deficit to 2-1. Malaka Belser also had a double as part of a nine-hit Cougar attack.

Charleston returns to action with a doubleheader at Furman on Wednesday and plays a three-game series at Hofstra next weekend.
