Lemire, Starks Lead Cougars to Game 1 Win Over Winthrop
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Payton Lemire tossed a complete game and was backed by a home run by Shealyn Starks and a five-run fifth in a 7-1 victory over Winthrop in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader in Rock Hill.
The Eagles bounced back to gain a split with a 2-1 win in the nightcap despite the solid pitching efforts of McKenna Kelly and Drayton Siegling.
Lemire allowed only five hits to reduce her ERA to 2.25, the fourth lowest in the CAA. She worked out of a bases loaded, nobody out jam in the sixth with only one run and started a 1-2-3 double play for the final two outs.
The game was scoreless when Jenna Helberg walked to start the fourth, and Starks slammed her second career home run to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Charleston got RBI singles from Payton Wade and Mia Dittoe and a sacrifice fly as part of its uprising in the fifth that put the game out of reach.
Dittoe provided the Cougars with their only run of the nightcap with a solo homer in the sixth. Kelly went the first 3.1 innings and allowed one earned run, and Siegling gave up just one hit in 2.2 shutout innings in relief.
Charleston returns home for a three-game CAA series against James Madison. The teams meet in a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
