COUGARS PRIMED FOR CAA TOURNAMENT OPENER AGAINST NORTHEASTERN

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The top-seeded College of Charleston baseball team will begin its quest for the program’s second CAA Tournament title on Thursday afternoon when the Cougars square off against fifth-seeded and defending champion Northeastern at 3:00 p.m. at Latham Park on the campus of Elon University.



The Cougars won the 2022 regular season title by four games with a 19-5 record against league opponents and enter the postseason having won 20 of their last 23. Northeastern defeated fourth-seeded William & Mary, 3-2, in the first round on Wednesday afternoon to advance into the winner’s bracket.



SERIES SNAPSHOT

The Huskies hold a narrow 13-9 advantage in the all-time series after defeating Charleston twice in the CAA Tournament last season at UNCW. Northeastern has won the last three meetings in the series and three of the last five.



PROBABLE PITCHERS

Thursday | 3:00 pm ET: RHP Ty Good (10-4, 3.43) vs. RHP Cam Schlittler (4-8, 3.61)



LEADING OFF



·         The Cougars have been rolling since early April winning 20 of their last 23 overall including 15 of the last 18 in CAA play to secure the program's second CAA regular season title.



·         Charleston equaled a program-record with 14 total CAA postseason awards on Tuesday including three major award winners in William Privette (Pitcher of the Year), Tyler Sorrentino (Co-Rookie of the Year) and Chad Holbrook (Coach of the Year). The Cougars placed three on the All-CAA First Team and five on the Second Team in addition to one Honorable Mention selection and two All-Rookie honorees.



·         Privette has been lights out this season out of the bullpen currently leading the nation in ERA (0.95) and fifth in hits allowed per nine innings (4.89) while ranking second in WHIP (0.81) and 10th in saves (12). He is one of two pitchers from the CAA on the NCBWA Midseason Stopper of the Year Watch List.



·         Junior JT Marr is one of 16 players named as semifinalists for the prestigious Buster Posey National Catcher of the Year award and the lone CAA representative on the list.



·         Head Coach Chad Holbrook earned his first career Coach of the Year honors on Tuesday after guiding the Cougars to a 36-17 overall record and a 19-5 mark in CAA play to win the league’s regular season title by four games.



·         Junior Ty Good has set the tone for the Cougars' rotation this season entering the postseason tied for second in the nation with 10 wins while leading the CAA with 83 strikeouts in 78.2 innings of work. The Rock Hill, S.C. native earned his first career postseason accolades on Tuesday nabbing a spot on the All-CAA First Team after holding opponents to a .199 batting average and posting a 3.43 ERA in 16 appearances during the regular season.



·         The Cougars have deployed one of the top outfields in both the league and the nation this season placing all three members of their starting outfield on the All-CAA Teams. Sam Cochrane, Trotter Harlan and Tyler Sorrentino each earned a spot on the All-CAA Second Team after combining for 25 extra-base hits, 69 RBI and 13 stolen bases during league play.



SCOUTING THE HUSKIES



·         Northeastern finished fifth in the regular season with a 10-14 record in league play earning the final spot in the championship with an 8-1 win at Delaware on the last day of the regular season.



·         The Huskies enter the postseason ranked fourth in the nation in ERA (3.48), fifth in WHIP (1.22) and 14th in hits allowed per nine innings (7.83).



·         Wyatt Scotti was named to the All-CAA Second Team after posting an 8-3 record with a 2.57 ERA during the regular season.



·         Eric Yost and Jordy Allard each earned All-CAA Honorable Mention accolades while Mike Sirota was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team.



·         Sirota paces the offense batting .326 with 14 doubles, four home runs and 20 RBI.



·         Thursday’s starter Cam Schlittler carries a 4-8 record with a 3.61 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 84.2 innings of work over 14 starts.
