COUGARS SPLIT WITH SEAHAWKS, BEARS SATURDAY



WILMINGTON, N.C. --- The Sky Benjamin and Ella Reames, and Amani Dunston and Sofie Vogel both went 2-0 to lead the College of Charleston beach volleyball team to a Saturday split with UNCW and Mercer at UNCW’s Tournament at Capt’n Bill’s Volleyball Facility.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In the first match of the afternoon session, UNCW got out to an early 2-0 lead with wins at both four’s and five’s and rallied for a three-set win at three’s to claim the match. Charleston were victorious in the top two flights. The Cougars bounced back in their second match of the day cruising to a sweep of Mercer.



PAIR OF THE DAY

Benjamin and Reames were paired together for the first time this season and were in synch from the opening serve posting a three-set win against UNCW’s top duo before sweeping Mercer’s one’s 21-19, 21-10.



NOTABLES



·      With their victory over Mercer, the Cougars reached double digits in wins for the fifth time in the last six seasons – the lone exception being the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.



·      Kyra Thompson and Gabi Bailey saw their 10-match winning streak snapped against UNCW before bouncing back with a straight-set win against Mercer.



·      Dunston and Vogel were paired together for the first time this season and posted back-to-back victories including a straight-set decision against the Bears.



·      Maria Zweig and Emma Falk were defeated for the first time this season in a gritty three-set match in the third flight against UNCW.



·      Marie Martinsen and Jasmin Goei cruised to a 21-16, 21-14 win in the fifth flight against Mercer.



·      The Cougars also posted a 5-0 victory against Liberty in an exhibition match to begin the day.
