COUGARS FALL TO GEORGIA, CHARLOTTE SATURDAY



ATHENS, Ga. --- The College of Charleston volleyball team fell to host Georgia in straight sets on Saturday morning and nearly completed the reverse sweep against Charlotte that evening falling to the 49ers in five sets to conclude the weekend at Georgia’s Bulldog Classic.



Georgia (5-0) defeated the Cougars by scores of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-20 in the morning session. The Bulldogs held Charleston to a .127 hitting percentage while totaling 45 kills and attacking at a .354 clip. Charlotte (5-2) rallied from three points down in the fifth set to deny Charleston (2-4) the reverse sweep winning the match by scores of 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 20-25, 15-13. The Niners finished the night with 68 kills, 12 aces and nine blocks compared to 64 kills, eight aces and 11 blocks for the Cougars.

Critical Point

With Charleston leading 10-7 in the fifth set, Charlotte embarked on a 5-2 run to even the tally at 12-12 before scoring three of the final four points to survive the Cougars’ fervent comeback effort.



Key Cougars



  *   Claire Campbell continued her torrid start to the season totaling 18 kills with only one error on the day. She put down 12 kills on 21 swings without committing an error against Charlotte while tying her career-high with seven blocks.

  *   Gabi Bailey and Anna Smith finished the day with 23 and 19 kills, respectively.

  *   Bailey turned in her third double-double of the season against Charlotte with 12 kills and a career-high 20 digs.

  *   Smith paced the Cougars with 15 kills and added seven digs and two blocks against Charlotte.

  *   Emma Appleman dished out 41 assists to go along with three aces, seven digs and two blocks against the Niners.

  *   Sophomore Chandler Manusky recorded 19 digs, six assists and two aces in her first collegiate start at libero against Charlotte.

  *   Logan Pope put down 10 kills on 21 swings and also had five blocks in the nightcap.





Match Notes



  *   Campbell posted a hitting percentage of at least .300 for the fifth and sixth straight matches to open the season. She currently sports a cumulative attacking clip of .506.

  *   The Cougars suffer their fourth straight setback for the first time since 2019.

  *   Charleston’s total of 11 blocks against Charlotte marks a season-best.

The Cougars return to the court on Friday when the Cougars host Incarnate Word to open play at the 2022 CofC Invitational. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in TD Arena.
