Cougars Look to Climb CAA Standings Against Towson

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston plays the first of two home games this week when the Cougars host Towson on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point.

Thursday is Fight Like a Girl Night with fans encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness, and the first 75 fans will received a pink pom pom. The Cougar Club will also be hosting a Meet the Coaches event for donors by the picnic area.

The Cougars enter the week with a 2-1-1 record in the CAA (8-4-1 overall) and are tied with Monmouth and Northeastern for third place with seven points. The trio trails Drexel (nine points) and William & Mary (eight) and are one point ahead of Elon and UNCW.

Towson (8-2-3 overall) sits in eight place with five points (1-1-2). The top eight teams at the end of the regular season advance to the CAA Tournament which begins on October 27.

Grace Powell is coming off a one-goal, one-assist performance in a 2-2 draw with the Tribe on Sunday and is second in the CAA with eight goals, one behind Towson’s Nia Christopher. Christopher (20) and Powell (18) are also 1-2 in the league in points.

Also powering the Cougar attack are Mary Alexander (4 goals, 3 assists), Faith Slimmer (3-5), Bubbles Dever (2-4), Olivia Freitas (3-2) and Delaney Dawes (3-1). Slimmer is tied for fifth in the CAA with her five assists.

Jasmine Hamid has six goals for the Tigers, and Phoebe Canoles is tied for the conference lead with six assists. Riley Melendez is second in the CAA with an 0.56 goals against average and .865 save percentage.

Each team has won twice to go along with four ties in the all-time series. The Cougars and Tigers played to a 2-2 draw last year in Towson with Slimmer and Dawes scoring the Charleston goals and Christopher scoring for the Tigers.

The two-game stretch this week concludes with a visit by Elon on Sunday at 1 p.m.
