Cougars Drop Narrow Decision at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Delaney Dawes scored a goal and nearly tallied the equalizer in the final two minutes in College of Charleston’s 2-1 loss at Hofstra on Sunday.

The defeat puts a serious dent in the Cougars’ hopes for a berth in the CAA Tournament. Charleston has eight points and is in 10th place, making next Sunday’s finale against UNCW at Patriots Point a must-win to have a chance for a spot in the eight-team field.

The Pride led 2-0 after scoring twice in the opening 15 minutes, but the Cougars were able to blank them the rest of the day despite allowing 28 shots and 12 on target. Savannah Barron had nine saves, one shy of her career high set earlier this season against Furman.

Dawes pulled Charleston within one in the 64th minute when she scored her fourth goal of the season to move into a tie for second on the team with Mary Alexander. Alexander had her fourth assist of the year and is tied with Faith Slimmer for second with 12 points.

With just under two minutes remaining in the match, the Cougars were awarded a free kick which came out to Dawes with the Hofstra goalkeeper out of position. But her shot was saved by the Pride defense to keep Charleston from gaining a draw.
