Solid Pitching Not Rewarded Against UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The College of Charleston received strong performances in the circle from Carli McCants and Payton Lemire, but the pair were outdueled in a doubleheader loss to UNCW on Saturday.

McCants allowed only three hits and struck out eight in a 1-0 loss in the opener. The Cougars had two late chances to tie or go in front but left multiple runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings.

The Seahawks scored the only run of the game in the fourth on a two-out walk followed by a run-scoring double. Emily Winstead made it stand up with 13 strikeouts in her two-hit shutout.

UNCW finished the sweep with a 4-2 win in the nightcap. Lemire gave up only five hits and two earned runs, but a two-run error in the third gave the Seahawks the lead for good at 3-1.

Lemire was in the lineup for the first time this season and made the move pay off with an RBI double to tie it at 1. Carsten Puckett gave the Cougars their final run with a solo homer in the seventh, her third of the season.

The teams wrap up their series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
