COUGARS PLACE 12TH AT TEAM RACE NATIONALS

NEW ORLEANS --- The College of Charleston sailing team battled through challenging conditions and stiff competition, and won several tough races but it was not enough as the Cougars finished 12th at the ICSA Team Race National Championship on Wednesday on the waters of Lake Pontchartrain.

“While we always want to win, our goal coming into this year's team race national championship was to improve on our initial ranking of ninth and make the round of eight,” Director of Sailing Kevin Jewett said. “While we would have loved to accomplish this, we did win some tough races and are confident that the lessons learned here will pay big dividends in the coming years.”

The Cougars finished stage one with a 4-11 record posting victories against Wisconsin, Hobart and William Smith, Harvard and Tufts to conclude the preliminary round four wins shy of a sail-off for a berth in the finals. Axel Stordahl, Pierce Ornstein, Brandon Geller and Max Anker skippered for the Cougars with Lucy Klempen, Noelle Owen, Kalea Woodard and Anna Sherry each crewing at least one race.

Charleston will next compete in the ICSA College Sailing Open Western Semifinal on Thursday and Friday with a berth in Saturday and Sunday’s finals on the line.
