Cougars Win Four Event Titles at Montreat College Invitational



MONTREAT, N.C. – Logan Gray, Cate Ambrose, Chloe Christian and Kacey Smekrud earned first place finishes to highlight the College of Charleston track and field team’s performance at the Montreat College Invitational.



Gray won the shot put and moved up from sixth to fourth in school history with a throw of 13.21m (43 feet, 4 ½ inches). She also threw the discus 39.12m (128 feet, 4 inches) to climb one spot to eighth in the Charleston record book.



Ambrose led a trio of Cougar scorers in the 1500 with her winning time of 4:43.19. Emily Dorony took fourth in 4:47.69, and Kristen Cherry was one spot behind in 4:48.65 with both setting PRs.



Christian was the winner in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 3.55m (11 feet, 7 ¾ inches), and Luzy Lieger was second at 3.40m (11 feet, 1 ¾ inches). Lieger also competed in the long jump for the first time in her collegiate career and moved into a tie for seventh in school history at 5.41m (17 feet, 9 inches).



Smekrud lowered her sixth-place time in school history by crossing first in the 800 in 2:17.95. Dorony was third in the event with a PR of 2:19.36 and moved up from 10th to eighth in school history, and Ambrose was fourth in 2:19.82, just missing on a spot in the Top 10.



Smekrud, Dorony, Ambrose and Rhian Purves were second in the 4x400 relay (4:09.76).



Kaitlynn Bailey had a pair of individual third place finishes, including the 200 (26.05) and 400 (59.19). She was teamed with Asiah Gadson, Lily Nowakowski and Alicia Wilson to finish third in the 4x100 relay (50.52).



Morgan Summey was fifth in the 5000 with a PR time of 18:52.82.
